TikTok functions as a photo app on Instagram

TikTok is creating a photo-sharing app to compete with Instagram, a rival social networking platform.

According to the company, it is developing a "dedicated space" for text and graphics.

Notifications stating that their photo posts will be transmitted to a new app called "TikTok Notes" unless they opt out have been sent to some users.

It's the most recent instance of social media companies copying one another's products; in 2020, Instagram will introduce Reels, a video tool akin to TikTok.

According to research director Mike Proulx of the analytical firm Forrester, "the copycat phenomenon runs rampant across social media platforms." He made this statement to the BBC.

He went on, citing Instagram's "Stories" feature as an example of how well-executed copycat features "pay off".

He did, however, point out that there was no assurance of success because Twitter had made a similar attempt that failed.

Instagram's emphasis on making Reels a bigger part of the platform has in the past irritated some users.

A petition was circulated by Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner, among others, protesting platform modifications that appeared to prioritize Reels over other app features in 2022.

In response to the criticism, Instagram reversed the adjustments.

TikTok claims that neither the Notes app's design nor its release date have been finalized.

However, some users have gotten messages indicating that the program will allow users to publish or share photo postings. Currently, the TikTok app allows users to post a series of photos with noises and filters.

Screenshots of the notification indicated that users of TikTok could choose not to have their photo posts shared to the app by toggling the option on the alerts.

According to social media strategist Matt Navarra, most TikTok users who "lurk" rather than "post" might interact better in a messaging or photo app.

However, he stated that he did not believe social media users were "desperate" for another photo-sharing app.

"I don't think there's that demand out there necessarily, because we have plenty of them," he remarked.

The US is passing laws that could result in TikTok's prohibition unless its Chinese owner sells the company within six months of the law's enactment, which is a challenging period for the business.

Although TikTok has historically added new features straight into the main app, "launching Notes as a separate app would be a departure in strategy," Jasmine Enberg, principal social media analyst at Insider Intelligence, said, "it makes sense given the current regulatory and consumer scrutiny."

"There are few places left where it doesn’t have a stronghold, and photo-sharing is one," she said.

Mike Proulx proposed that TikTok would be better off following Meta's lead and actively leveraging its existing Instagram user base, as it did with Threads, its rival on Twitter.

"But like Threads, the key will be creating a compelling enough experience to get them to stick around TikTok Notes beyond the initial curiosity factor," he stated.

"What sets apart one social media platform from another gets less distinct as social media features become more commonplace. It ultimately boils down to user experience, community, and—yes—algorithms.
